Obel Cruz-Garcia (born 1967 in the Dominican Republic) was sentenced to death in 2013 for a crime he says he did not commit. He is on death row in the “Polunsky Unit” in Texas. When Obel stood trial in 2013, he could not understand the English language spoken in court because he only spoke Spanish. Nevertheless, the jury was to decide on his life. The public prosecutor accused him of murdering a 6-year-old boy. An act that took place around 20 years ago. Obel could not afford a defense attorney because lawyers for death penalty trials are extremely expensive. But Harris County also does not provide public defenders in death penalty cases, only a private defense attorney who only receives a flat fee for his work. However, this attorney had an extremely high caseload, and his caseload consistently exceeded the recommended guidelines. After only one day of deliberation, the jury reached their verdict. Obel was sentenced to death. Obel Cruz-Garcia did not have a fair trial! Obel writes: “I believe in the mercy of God. And in the work you have been doing for a long time, you who are fighting for us, the prisoners on death row ..... We are already seeing the fruits of what has been sown, and we hope that it will get even better. !!!!! Amen” |
